MasterChef - Search Techniques and Permission

Over the last month we have been learning all about the importance of searching the internet effectively. We have learnt various techniques to help us find information more accurately. Some of these techniques are as follows;

-effective keyword use (very important!)
-filetype
-colour search
-similar image search
-line drawing search

We have also learnt the importance of how to search for information/images that we have permission to use, share and even modify. Below is a video of how we do this...

We have used all this knowledge to help us complete our MasterChef challenge! To create a "MasterChef Recipe Book" of all our favourite foods and treats only using recipes and images we have been given permission to use from the internet! Each of us is creating a book that we will share with our classmates once we have finished. We will eventually vote and come up with a girl and boy winner from each class. These recipe books will be displayed on our blog and will be able to be downloaded by other classmates, the local community and by anyone around the world!! Keep a look out for the winning recipe books!

Here is an example that has been created. It will show you how the books will be displayed on the internet and just how easily you can download them!

Below is an image that explains how you can download the recipe books.

These videos have then been uploaded to our newly created TeacherTube channel "FabFatima". Click on the image or link below and check out some of the videos we have created! Enjoy!!

Venn Diagrams - Classifying Shapes

Earlier on in the year the grade 4's looked at shapes and how they are made. They used "Venn Diagrams" to help them do this. Venn Diagrams allow you to look at similarities and differences between things. Here is an example of a Venn Diagram looking at the similarities and differences between a "Rectangular Prism" and a "Cube".

Cyber Safety

The 4's, 5's & 6's have been learning all about Cyber Safety during our Monday classes with Mr. Will. We have continued to document what we have learnt using the "Idea Sketch" brainstorming app. Displaying what we have learnt in this way allows visual learners to be able to understand the concepts of Cyber Safety more easily.

Here are some examples of the brainstorms that we have completed.

Competition Winner

Congratulations to Daniel from year 6 who has won our banner competition. Daniel's banner was a clear winner amassing over 25% of the votes. Votes also went to other banners, many receiving around 10% of the votes. A big pat on the back to all students who entered the competition and thank you to all students, friends and family members who voted for their favourite banner.

Podcasting

Podcasting has hit Fatima!

After hearing a sample of what could be possible (Yonnie & Jordan's Podcast of "What we think about the iPads") some of our year 6 students have taken it upon themselves to organise some podcasting.

Matt, Tom, Ben and Spencer have decided to start a regular show call "Footy Fanatics" that focuses on the the weekend's footy (AFL)! Yonnie and Jordan are also in the process of organising a new show following on from their original podcast where they will be asking the kids around the school some questions about topical issues!

Below is the first "Footy Fanatics" podcasts! Unfortunately due to unforseen circumstances we were unable to complete the first show. We have still uploaded what we did complete so we can give you a taste of what's to come. We hope you enjoy it!

Blogging Brainstorm - Padlet

Here is a brainstorm about what we think a Blog is? It's good to see what we know before we learn about a topic, that way we can look back and see just how much we've learnt! We used a program called "Padlet" to do this! This is a year 5 brainstorm. (If you are a year 5 and would like to add your thoughts please feel free to do so!)

Cyber Safety

Cyber Safety is an important part of being able to use technology effectively in the classroom (especially our iPads). We have begun learning all about what it means to be Cyber Safe and learnt tips and tricks to use when using technology at home and in the classroom.

This week we brainstormed what we knew about Cyber Safety using an app called "Idea Sketch".
"Aden - Grade 4"

We then watched some animations that focussed on two areas of Cyber Safety.

1. Emailing (Do not open emails from people who you don't know as they might be a virus or a scam.)
2. Searching on the Net (If you come across inappropriate content online close the window you are working in. If this does not work close the browser or the computer. Be sure to tell a trusted adult also.)

We discussed each area and added any new learning to our original "Idea Sketch" brainstorm. We used this program so we could visualise our learning.

iPad Interviews

It's been almost 2 weeks now and the iPads are now well and truly a part of the Fatima landscape. iPads are being used everyday in all sorts of ways!

Some of our year 6 boys (Yonnie and Jordan) decided to find out just what the kids of Fatima thought about the new iPads and how they have been using them in class. Here's what they had to say!

Our Fake Blogs

This week we learnt all about blogging and what it's used for. A blog is a website that anyone can create and contribute to on any topic they choose. We learnt that blogs can be used for two different reasons.

1. To educate yourself (When you follow a blog/s.)
2. To educate others (When you create a blog of your own and people follow you.)

We decided to create our own fake blogs in class to get an idea of how they work. During this process we learnt the DO's and DONT'S of blogging. (Only use first names, don't give out surnames / addresses / phone numbers / personal information of individuals)

We also focussed on the ability to post comments on a blog and the importance of showing respect when doing this.

The lessons we have learnt in this class we will use when contributing to our "Fabulous Fatima" blog.

Here is an example of the blogs we created in class...

Blogging at Fatima - Banner Competition

We have recently launched our Fabulous Fatima blog where we are going to share what we have learnt in class. The blog has been created by Mr. Will and he has posted the first few entries.

Mr. Will has asked that we make this blog our own. He would like us to firstly design and then contribute to this blog on a weekly basis.

To begin with we will need to create our own banner for the blog. A competition has been created to create and choose the "Fabulous Fatima" banner that will be displayed at the top of our blog. Students have the opportunity to create a banner of their own and submit them to Mr. Will by Monday 5th August. Entries will be displayed on the blog from this date for 1 week. During this week you will have an opportunity to vote for the banner you like most. Votes will be taken until Monday 12th August where a winner will be announced.

Below are some suggestions for apps and web tools you might like to use to help you make this banner. Comment below if you know of any other cool sites or apps that could help you in this process.

Please email completed banners with your name and grade to Mr. Will at wsederino@fatimarosebud.catholic.edu.au

GOOD LUCK, HAVE FUN AND BE CREATIVE!!!

Our Learning Style

On Monday 22nd August we (year 4/5/6) had our first iPad class with Mr. Will. We went through the basics of using the iPad and also learnt some really neat tips and tricks that will help us in completing activities more efficiently. We learnt the...

4 finger swipe up/down

5 finger swipe in
Some keyboard tips and tricks. (We watched a video from the iTunes U app that told us all about some not very commonly known functions in the keyboard)

As a class we also shared any cool things we had discovered for ourselves from using the iPad. Below are some other tricks we shared with our classmates.

Keyboard split

We also used the "Socrative Student" app to complete a quiz that Mr. Will had prepared. It was all about what experience we had in using "iDevices" and what we thought success would look and feel like when using our iPads. Here is a "Wordle" (Word Cloud) on what we think success looks and feels like.

We also completed an online Quiz telling us what our learning style is. (Audatory, Kinaesthetic, Visual)

We all use different learning styles but most of us have a dominant style that we prefer. Here's the link to the quiz we took. See if you can figure out what your style is?

iPad rollout - Monday Class with Mr. Will

Well the iPads have finally been rolled out at Fatima and the school is a buzz with excited students, parents and teachers! The playground chat is all about the latest app that's been discovered and what's been done during classtime.

After a fairly smooth setup process during the parent teacher interviews Fatima added another piece to their 21st century classroom!

Mr. Will has also begun taking each 4/5/6 class for iPad based lessons every Monday. Each class will have a 45min session where they will be able to complete various investigations and activities using the iPad.

Please keep a look out for weekly updates on what we are doing in this class. We will be posting updates regularly and display some work we have been completing.

Listen to Mr. Will tell us all about our new blog...
